Mindful Teaching: An Experiential 8-Week Course for Youth-Serving Professionals Syllabus


WEEK 1: INTRODUCTION TO MINDFULNESS AND THE BENEFITS OF A PERSONAL PRACTICE

  • Mindfulness as an individual and relational practice

  • Benefits to mindfulness

  • Introduction to the neuroscience of mindfulness

  • Engaging in compassionate listening

WEEK 2: QUALITY OF LIFE IS DETERMINED BY THE FOCUS OF OUR ATTENTION

  • Mindful Movement

  • Mindfulness practices: Awareness through the senses

  • Exploring resistance to pain

WEEK 3: EMBODIMENT

  • Mindful Eating

  • Exploring stress and how it manifests in the body  

  • Body Scan

WEEK 4: EXPLORING THE INTERNAL LANDSCAPE

  • Uncovering negative self-talk and positive self-talk

  • Exploring reassurances

WEEK 5: RETURNING TO PRESENCE

  • Exploring identification with the conditioned mind

  • Learning how to dis-identify from the conditioned mind

  • Research: Neuroplasticity

  • Introduction to reflective listening

WEEK 6: INTEGRATION - BRINGING YOUR LIFE INTO YOUR PRACTICE

  • Mindful Walking

  • Practicing reflective listening

  • Exploring survival strategies & coping mechanisms

WEEK 7: UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

  • Exploring the practice of loving-kindness

HOMEWORK:

Registered participants can earn 20 CEUs and 20 clock hours toward professional development units upon completion of the training. Certificate of completion provided by Lewis and Clark College.

This course offers one semester hour for those interested in pursuing graduate credit. To receive credit, students will need to complete the following at the end of the training:

  • Participation in a four-hour personal mindfulness retreat of the students’ own design, and submission of a reflective 1 page essay regarding the experience.

  • Submission of Applied Mindfulness Homework/Log at conclusion of the class series

  • Completion of required reading assignment

  • Submission of 1/2 page reflection on the required reading.
