The heart of education.

Beginning in Portland, Oregon in 2014, Peace in Schools is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a national leader in mindfulness education. Each year, we bring trauma-informed, equity-centered, and mindfulness-based social-emotional learning to hundreds of teens and adults across the country.

We define mindfulness as “Being here and now with kindness.” Mindfulness practice empowers us to know who we authentically are and to live healthy, courageous, and joyful lives.

What is an education in awareness, compassion, and belonging?

We have created an essential inner curriculum for teens. Mindful Studies is the nation's first, for-credit, research-backed mindfulness class in public high schools. It’s a way for teens to ask important questions:

Who am I?

How can I have hope?

What do I value?

How can I be happy?

How can I belong?

Addressing teen mental health through deep mindfulness practice.

We all want to belong. We all want to know love. Amidst a growing teen mental health crisis, Mindful Studies serves as an accessible, equitable, and research-backed antidote to teen suffering and isolation.

The teens who complete Mindful Studies report:

  • 94% are better able to be present

  • 97% are better able to deal with stress

  • 96% have more compassion for self and others

  • 93% feel like they belong more around their peers

  • 90% have better relationships with family and friends
